Observing time at large telescopes is valuable and sometimes one only observes several hours a night (e.g. the transit of an exoplanet) and the rest of the time is for other projects. The big advantage for the visiting observer is, that they can enjoy the night sky on such a dark sport themselves. Although, the night wasn’t too dark, the moon illuminates the telescope and mountain landscape, otherwise my Olympus from 2002 wouldn’t have had a chance to catch the landscape.
