Thailand October 2019

Wachirathan Waterfall in the Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand One of the great stops when driving to from Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon is the Wachirathan water fall. In this case the picture was taken at the end of the rainy season, which means a nice cooling moist breeze blows away from the water fall. After the hot flat valley for most of the drive, the green is also a nice difference. This is also, what causes the rainbow in the featured imgage of the article.
Thailand has a telescope on their highest mountain, Doi Inthanon, at about 2400m elevation, hence I got the chance to spend some work days in the national park a few years ago. The jungle around the telescope on the other hand has it’s challenges, observations on the transition between the dry and rainy season means the humidity is often too high to open the dome. We still could test the spectrograph successfully.

Switzerland 2014

Mountain goat in the Swiss Alps. We visited Friends in Switzerland (our travel there was already covered in one post) and one day we went together to the Niederhorn. And while enjoying the landscape, a mountain goat appeared behind the railing and also wasn’t disturbed by our sudden interest, knowing that we wouldn’t dare to go anywhere close to the steep cliff it was balancing along.

Moon halo 2022

Moon halo / moon dog / 22° halo as seen in a March night in England. I didn’t visit the moon (but would be up for it), and instead wanted to share the image of the moon halo I could taken recently in the garden. It’s an effect created by millions of ice particles in the atmosphere.
More on my professional page: https://ronnyerrmann.uk/2022/03/15/moon-halo-22-halo/
I also took a time lapse to see what changes – it’s a very stable effect. -
Scotland 2017 (2)

Stac Pollaidh with a lot of Scottish landscape It has been already nearly 5 years ago, that I visited Scotland. I want to go again for a second time, the remote landscape is something so beautiful. Just looking at the image and remembering the time helps me feel relaxed.
A time lapse of the sunset from a position close to here can be found on Ronny’s youtube channel: https://youtu.be/UqokoCJz76M
3 hour time lapse of the sunset in Scotland, with sheep, great colours, and interesting clouds -
Ruhr valley 2021

Hattingen (Ruhr) at night, Germany To visit new friends in person, I used my last trip to Germany to also pass by the Ruhr valley area. However, I’m not a great fan of cities (as visible in the posts), so as a compromise I stayed in Hattingen. From there it’s easy to use the public transport to get to the big cities in the Ruhr valley, and at the same time nature is just a few steps away for walks and hikes in my free time. The old town of Hattingen was really nice, and I enjoyed my time there.

La Palma 2014

Looking down on 10 story buildings of Santa Cruz de La Palma, Spain at sunrise. I lived on the Canary Island La Palma for one year. It was an amazing year. There are more pictures to share, this is one of the first ones, taken at the beginning of a walk on my first morning on the island. And when I say walk, it actually turned out to be a hike, the geography meant that that in the 2 hours I climbed and descended 400m elevation.

England 2021

Finally the clouds moved away and the sun came out (United Kingdom) It took a bit longer than expected, but finally the clouds moved away and the sun came out. The above picture shows the clouds, moving left. Until then the cycle ride in this early October Sunday was a bit chilly. After the sun came out I watched out for a quiet place to have lunch and eventually found a lovely place (as seen in the image). Only later, after studying the map, I noticed that I actually was sitting on old burial mound. The panorama picture captured them.

Norway 2014 (3)

View from Vuomahytta to a small glacier. The glacier relatively close to the hut (Vuomahytta) would have been a nice goal for a day trip, I think. It would have still been a day of hiking, as two thirds of the distance there wouldn’t have been a path. However, we didn’t schedule a rest day in our hiking trip in Norway, and so we just headed to the next hut on this lovely morning. And it’s likely that the glacier isn’t there anymore, due to human made climate crisis (to which we also participated by flying here).

Cornwall 2018 (2)

On the path to the beach of Porth Joke in Cornwall, UK The weather in the UK during that June and July in 2018 was surprisingly sunny. I remember thinking two weeks before my holiday, that if it’s sunny now, I will probably have a lot of rain on my cycle tour. And even this one week of dry weather was unexpected. But no, it didn’t rain for three weeks that summer and I stayed (except for one rain shower) completely dry during my nine day trip. Part of day one of the tour I described already, this was the destination of day two.

Calar Alto October 2011

Telescopes on Calar Alto during an autumn observation night. (Copyright: Ronny Errmann) Observing time at large telescopes is valuable and sometimes one only observes several hours a night (e.g. the transit of an exoplanet) and the rest of the time is for other projects. The big advantage for the visiting observer is, that they can enjoy the night sky on such a dark sport themselves. Although, the night wasn’t too dark, the moon illuminates the telescope and mountain landscape, otherwise my Olympus from 2002 wouldn’t have had a chance to catch the landscape.
